Cold Air Intake (CAI) 96-98 V6 Grand Am's
This is a simple right up for a Custom Cold Air Intake for a 96-98 Grand Am with
the 3100 engine.
For the Air filter I used a 5"x5" Ractive Tornado Air Filter purchased at a
local Performance shop. Don't get one much bigger than 5" x 5" this one
barely fit inside fender.
DISCLAMER : JEREMY IS NOT RESPONSIBILE IF YOU SCREW UP YOU CAR, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
I am not very good with cars. This is the first time I've ever taken on a project like this with out the supervision of my father. This project took about 2 hours to complete, once all the parts where gathered.
Parts
3 - 3" Bendable heating Duct tubes (I bought 4)
2 - 3" extender Duct tubes
4 - 3" Clamps
1 - Role of 2" White Duck tape
1 - 5"x5" Tornado Round Filter
$9.43 for the hardware and $35 for the filter.
This is a picture of the piping and Filter I used

I started by taking out the old air box. First unbolted the stock air box. Then loosen the battery to get it out of the way. Make sure to detach the tube leading from the box to the head light. (It makes removal much easier).

Check out the dirt that has built up at the bottom of the box after 93,457 Miles.

Then I had to make something to go in to the Mass Air Flow box. The opening to this is 3 1/2 inches and all I had was 3 " Piping. Take sheet metal cutters and cut slits in to one of the extender duct peace's made the ends a little bigger then wrapped it with duck tape.

You need to take apart the black part below the fender so you can put in the filter. After finding out how the pipe would fit up there I affixed the filter to the pipe, and stuck it up there. (This was the step where I got most of my scrapes, be careful.)

Next came the 2 Pipes that led from the MAF to the hole in the fender. It took
awhile to figure out the right shape and angles to make it work. At each
connection point you need to use the 3" clamps to keep everything together and
in place. The 2 adjustable pipes are not long enough so you need to cut the
other extender duct peace, similar to the one for the MAF. You need to cut or
drill a hole in this peace so the Air Temperature Sensor can be inserted.
The Air Temperature Sensor MUST be removed from
the stock air box and inserted in to the new piping. If this is not done your
check engine light WILL come on. This sensor is very sensitive be
careful handing it. After the sensor is inserted just affix it with some duct
tape (as seen in the picture).

You need to wrap each connection point with duct tape to keep all the air in the tubes.
There you go a Cold Air Intake.
In the process of removing my AT sensor I destroyed it. I ordered a new one, it was $22 Part number GR.3.682.
